An Explorative Study on the Stress Experienced by Infertile Women

Abstract
This study was designed to examine thestress experienced by the infertile women.
The main purpose of this study was to identify the stress responses of infertile women.
The purposes were
1. to develop a stress scale
2. to test the reliability of the developed scale
3. to determine the rank of the stress
4. to examine the relationship of the stress and the sociodemographic characteristics of the subjects.
The 142 subjects of this study were selected at Seoul National University. Hospital. Data was collected with a self administered questionnaire which consisted of 65 items related to the stress responses of infertile women during the period from September 16 to October 2, 1987.
Results of this study are as follows;
1. The reliability of the developed stress scale was Cronbach a of. 0.86400 and split-half reliability of 0.85595.
2. The 10 highest ranked stress responses were:
1) "I wish that I would conceive a baby,"
2) "I would like to have a role as a mother."
3) "A baby is necessary for a married couple."
4) "I envy women who are pregnant."
5) "I don¢¥t like to answer questions about pre-
gnancy and babies."
6) "It takes a lot of time to evaluate infertility."
7) "I¢¥m afraid that I can not conceive in spite of long term treatment."
8) "I don¢¥t like to hear about pregnancy and babies."
9) "I should not believe my infertility."
10) "There are many physical sufferings in the procedure of evaluation or treatment." "Economic loss is incurred on evaluation-and treatment."
3. There was significant difference in the degree of stress, the age of the subjects, the age of the spouses, the duration of the marriage, and the cause of infertility. But there was no significant difference in the degree of stress according to the other variables such as educational level, occupation, religion, type of infertility, classification of infertility and experience with delivery.
